WMS will making an appearance at "The San Dimas Festival of Arts Wildlife Art Show"! We will have a wolf with us, which one is undecided as of now. It really depends on who wants to be loaded that day. :) Come out and show your support for WMS by attending the show. Come and get your photo taken with one of our wolves. This will be a fun event! Share it with us.....
Sorry I have not been updating this weekly story. I have been very busy with WMS and helping some friends in Dog Rescue.
We have implemented some new fundraisers, the Wolf Bottle Pendants and Wolf Pictures for sale on www.digitalsbydanna.com. Check them out. We will be listing them on EBay soon.
We are trying to get some grants and I have been working hard trying to find them. If you have any info on grants we may be able to get or can help with grant writing, please send me an email at wolfmtnsanctuary@yahoo.com.
This summer has been hard on WMS as they always are. The wolves and the staff have to deal with the triple digit temperatures and it is hard. There are not many visitors during the summer so if you can help out and send a donation that would be greatly appreciated.
Work is going slow on Tamaka's pen. Fencing companies are not wanting to work on our HARD ground as it breaks heavy equipment. We have one company that is lined up but not until the hot summer is over as they are booked solid. We have got some work done on it by using a jack hammer that is being donated a few days at a time by a staff member's father. He has to use it in his business so we can just use it when it is available. The fencing is waiting for us to get done. Tamaka is doing well and is eating and keeping his weight good. He seems to be over the grieving period.
The pups are all grown up and they have all have their roles in their pack. Wanagi is the alpha female. Yawto is the alpha male. Istas is the beta and Wacipi is the omega. Wanagi and Istas are mates and in love. :)
Apache is getting older and older. All he seems to do is lay on the cool grass and sleep. Tonya is giving him herbs to help him. It is getting harder and harder for him to get up. He walks very slowly but still considers himself the WMS alpha. He still checks the different compounds from outside each day and goes into his sleeping compound for the night. During the day and evening he wanders the sanctuary and keeps watch in between naps. Please come and visit Apache before he goes to the sky people. When that happens it will be VERY hard for all of us, especially the wolves and Tonya.
Age is also setting in on Dakota and Segoni, though Durango still seems young. There is always a tug of war for alpha in this compound. It goes from Segoni to Durango sometimes daily. Dakota doesn't care and just wants to get his belly rubbed. *giggle*.
Niwah and Blue are doing well. The juveniles, Wakinyan, Wana and Shanta are still bad kids. They don't get tours as much as they used to as they sometimes get too excited and a little rough, so we play it by ear.
Sedona and Mireya are still separated and we will not put them together until they have a bigger area. They play a little too rough with each other.
Mishomi is still the big lover and the biggest wolf.
Hope you enjoyed the update....
Howls to you all!

WMS is now making personal wolf pendants, a very personal way to have your favorite wolf close to you!!

Funds from the bottles will be put into special account set up for an evacuation bus. This is very important in case we ever need to evacuate WMS. Most of the fencing is at WMS!!!! We still have one more load to be delivered. We got a HUGE amount of fence!!!
We have hired a Bobcat driver with an auger and he will be clearing land on Thursday, May 6, 2005!!!
All your donations made this happen!
Once the land is cleared, we will need work crews to come up and help us build the compounds. We are building a NEW compound for Tamaka and another wolf, undecided at this time. It may be Wana or if we get new rescue pups which we usually get this time of year, it may be a pup for him. He will definitely get a new companion. We are also building a compound for Sedona and Mireya, Mishomi and extending the compounds for the Big Boys (Durango, Dakota and Segoni - Niwah and Blue.
This is so great for our wolves and YOU made it happen!!!
Please check here for updates.
If you can come and help or know people experienced in putting up fencing, please call Tonya at 760-248-7818 asap!!!
We are almost there!!!
Tamaka is doing good and I think he knows what we are up too....

Wolf Mountain Sanctuary is in need of new adoptive parents. Our meat bill has been raised significantly and we are having trouble making the payment each week. Please adopt a wolf and send us a monthly adoption to help us with the feed bill. Please spread the word about WMS.
Current adoptive parents: Please send your monthly donations in on time each month. We depend on these donations and cannot make it without them.
Remember that when you sign up for wolf adoption you are making a committment to this wolf to help with it's care.
Thank you very much.
To all the adoptive parents that pay each month as promised, we could not make it without you!!!

More good news, Elrod Fencing has helped us out and we will actually receive enough fencing to make not one, not two but THREE new compounds. We will be able to give Tamaka a new home, also Mireya/Sedona and Mishomi!!! This will be great to get all the wolves into bigger compounds where they can run and play!
WHAT WE NOW NEED??? Work crews. We need volunteers to help us clear the land to put up the new compounds. We will also need a crew to construct the compounds. PLEASE CALL WMS AT 760-248-7818 to sign up for this!!! Or send an email to danna@wolfmountain.com.

VISIT TO THE VET:
Two weeks ago the cubs; Yawto, Wachipi and Wanagi had a visit to the vet. They went to get spayed/neutered. We at WMS do not believe in breeding wolves in captivity unless it is to save a species. The three of them handled the operation well.
When Bob, our caretaker, went in to get the youngins' Istas did not want him to take them. He decided if he pulled on Bob's pants and legs that he would not take his kids. Istas has taken over the role of father to the youngsters very firmly. Well Bob needed help so Tonya (Alpha Mom) came in and Istas tried keeping here away from the kids too... It was rather comical. But Alpha Mom won and they took their trip to the vets.
Check out the SPECIAL PROJECTS page. Updated pics of the wolves on the grass! There is a great story about a great group of people that helped WMS!
SAN DIMAS PICTURES:
Too all of you that ordered pics at the San Dimas Art Show, you have not been forgotten. I have been SUPER busy and have had a few computer/printer problems but you will be getting your pics by the end of the month! Thanks for the extra donations for these.
On October 23, 2004 something exciting happened. Our wolves met a camel, in San Dimas,
California of all places!!!
We brought Apache Moon (he wanted to come very badly!), Wanagi and Yawto to the 8th Annual San Dimas Wildlife Festival of Arts Show. We wanted Wachipi to come too but she refused to load that morning. She wanted to stay home, so Istas had to stay with her. Apache told us he wanted to go and we let him do as he pleases so he rode up front with Tonya. The trip was okay as it was cool that day. Yawto is not a good traveler though, he gets car sick.
We arrived at the show and everyone was waiting for the wolves. Wanagi
and Yawto are now almost 6 months old and the size of full grown dogs. They are still our
babies though. We put up tape around our booth on the grass to keep the wolves from being
crowded. They love the grass, they only get to see it at shows so they were rolling in it and
eating it all day.
Tonya gave a speech to the very small crowd and right after that the camel arrived. The wolves saw him in the parking lot. Apache had met him before so it was no big deal for him. Wanagi sniffed him but did not like him at all, She backed up with her tail between her legs. Yawto, who seems to be taking an Alpha role, did not back off as quick though his tail was between his legs too. Later on in the day I took Yawto a bit closer to the camel and they were face to face and Yawto didn't like it as the camel was much too tall. The camel handler, a very nice lady, had the camel lay down. Yawto smelled him and he smelled Yawto, we got some great pics!

A group of students that sponsor Apache showed up. It was great for them
all to see Apache and touch him. They want to sponsor another wolf and wanted to meet
Wanagi and Yawto. I wonder who they will choose?
The wolves made many new friends that day and we hope they all come to visit the rest of the wolves at WMS. A young 10 year old girl was sketching the wolves and she has remarkable talent.... She plans on coming up to sketch more of our wolves.

Trudy Estes, acclaimed wildlife artist who paints our wolves, was there at the
show with her beautiful work. http://www.trudylestes.com/
It was a great day. We raised some funds but are still behind on the meat
bill...

We had a great time at the "Festival of Arts at Laguna Beach". A big THANK YOU to Artist CHRIS HOY for setting this up and inviting us to participate in this great event. Apache Moon, Yawto, Wachipi, and Wanagi joined us. Thank you too all the volunteers who helped us take care of the wolves during the festival.
It's hard work bringing 4 wolves to an event. Transporting them is tough and traumatic for them, especially in the heat. It took us almost 3 hours to get to Laguna Beach from the Sanctuary. We had to stop and walk the wolves and give them water. The cubs were nervous and scared at first, as this is their 2nd outing, but they snapped out of it! Apache was the trooper he always is. This is Apache's final performance, he is 18 now and too old to travel. Please come and visit him soon! The cubs spent a lot of time sleeping on the stage, but all the wolves met many many interested visitors.
People were waiting in line to greet the wolves and everyone was so nice. The staff at the facility was GREAT, thank you to all of them. We had a staff member with us every moment. They would let only a few people up on the stage at a time, this was to protect the wolves and give us all enough space to be comfortable. They were all very professional.
We made a lot of contacts, made many new friends and hope all of them come to visit the rest of the wolves at the sanctuary, to be able to see them in their own environment. Tonya gave several very informative lectures throughout the day teaching people about wolves and telling them stories about our pack. After each lecture Tonya would answer all the questions the audience had. It was a great learning experience too all involved. We will be attending this event next year...
See newspaper article in "The Coastline Pilot".

The Run for the Animals Event went well. The cubs made their debut! Everyone fell in love with them. They handled being away from home okay. Wachipi (Shadow Dancer) did not like it very much but Yawto (Sing to Me) and Wanagi (Guiding Spirit) were okay. They got to see grass for the first time, they enjoyed playing on it.
We made several great contacts that have offered to help WMS!
A big THANKS to Martine and all the people of Wildlife Way Station for inviting us to this great event!! We hope to go back next year!
The cub's pics and info are now on the Adoption Page, check it out!
